Since the database crashed on my site, I've been kind of nervous about keeping stuff on there. I figure it's high time to back up my recaps to Archive of Our Own. So as not to inundate my 'works' page, I've decided to do one work per fandom, with episode recaps as individual chapters.

You have to start somewhere, so I've done the first two episodes of TS. If you want to re-read, or you've never read them but will now that they are on AO3, the info is below! I have no idea how long this will take me--probably awhile--but subscribe to me or check back periodically for updates. I'll post here when I've completed the work.

I'm also backing up the screencaps on my reference photo tumblr, tagging them in the process for easy finding later.

I'm in the process of revamping my Baby-sitters Club book recaps/reviews. I put everything in a DB backend so they can be sorted in various ways and added information such as writer and release date. I'm still not totally done with the coding, so it might occasionally be in accessible, but it's probably about as done as it's going to get, since I'm getting bored.

There are some new reviews in here, and the reviews of the first four books have been redone. Enjoy!

Because I'm kinda between things, some recaps!

DS 3x3: I Coulda Been A Defendant Ray and Fraser briefly watch them embrace through the one-way glass, but Fraser says, "They have a right to their privacy," probably hoping that anybody else would do him the same courtesy should they happen upon him getting cozy with another another man in the interrogation room.

DS 3x5: Seeing Is Believing "Oh!" says Thatcher. "Just because she's a woman, she can't be the killer, she can only be the motive!" "It's good to be the motive," Ray insists. "It's very good to be the motive." Aw, Ray. Do you kinda wish you were the motive?

I've also done some light editing on some of the other DS recaps. I think I've been erring too much on the side of not quoting extensive portions of dialogue because I didn't want it to be like, the annotated transcripts. Then I thought, why not? It's just, I've never recapped something where I actually liked huge bunches of the dialogue before. (Sorry, TS.)

I've also tried include a little more analysis and, occasionally, mentions of fics and episode metas which influenced my thinking, although I haven't read nearly as widely as most people in fandom, so please do let me know if you have your own favorite episode-related fics or metas (for these or other episodes) which you think I would enjoy!

I've written recaps for Mounty on the Bounty Part 1 and Part 2. Blame typos on the fact that they were mostly written last night at what turned out to be 4 AM? Although it was only three for me. I mean, Daylight Savings Time. I can't believe we had to lose an hour. Obvs. I am using my time productively!

These recaps have illustrative screencaps; also, I added screencaps to my previous DS recaps, which are for the record Some Like It Red, Burning Down the House, Eclipse, and Strange Bedfellows. I feel like a few screencaps really add visual interest, and give you more of a feeling of the episode. Even though this show likes to put all the interesting parts in the pitch dark.

So, I was all AWOL last year (and now look at me spamming your flist), but it turns out I actually did some stuff which for some reason I never posted about. Specifically, recaps. I was just trying to get my site up to date with the latest fic and art and I'm pretty sure I never LJ'd about having recapped Xena season 1 (medium length recaps) or the first half of Star Trek: TNG season 1 ("unnecessarily-detailed"-length recaps). A cursory glance at them both reveals many, many, many typos, but still! They're there!

1. YULETIDE STORY IS UPLOADED. Man, that's a load off. Even though I'm extremely ambivalent about how it turned out. (Confidental to [livejournal.com profile] mab_browne: Thankfully, though, I ended up cutting most of the second half.) This brings me up to 10 in 2008. Can I write two more stories in the next 11 days? Time will tell!

2. A new set of mini-recaps for your persual, if you're into that kind of thing:

Red Dwarf, Series 5-8
Don't Think About It Or Your Brain Will Explode: Lister realizes that he is his own father. Kochanski is totally erratic: after getting a chance to go back to her own universe, she suddenly announces "I've decided to stay!", and risks her life to go back to the crew she doesn't like as much and who don't like her as much and who are clearly worse. And then she spends the rest of the series moping about how much she misses her universe and her Dave. Also, Lister realizes he is his own father. In this episode, Lister realizes he is his own father.

3. Another new set of mini-recaps, ibid.: Criminal Minds, Season 1
Hotch knocks Reid down and kicks him savagely in the stomach while yelling at him unnecessarily. Turns out it was a gesture of ultimate trust and confidence: he was manipulating the physical configuration so that Reid could get close to the weapons and get a clear line of sight to the killer. Reid nails the shot to the killer's head (though he claims he was aiming for his leg). When, at the end of the episode, Hotch gives Reid a cursory apology, Reid immediately accepts, possibly (and I may be projecting here) because the whole Hotchellus thing was kind of a turn-on.

Maybe I've been remiss in checking my flist, but I haven't seen much about SGA 5x01. I didn't even know it had happened until [livejournal.com profile] keefaq told me. Are we all over SGA? I feel like I kind of am.

So, season 5 premiere. Let's see. )

Here's my usual transcription-heavy non-analysis which will probably only be of interest to you if you did not see the episode yourself.

O-kay! Something to cross off my list of things to do!

I put some solid work in tonight and finally, finally finished watching Demon Under Glass. I have been at it since, like, October. I just couldn't watch for longer than about five minutes at a time.

What I'm trying to tell you, I guess, is that that's why the recap is so incredibly detailed.

DEMON UNDER GLASS "In a featureless black box room, the three doctors watch through a one-way mirror into the super-secure-totally-look-we-boringly-showed-all-these-security-measures room where the SWAT guys are installing Marcus's casket. Subcommander Tal tells [Blair] that inside is a 'creature of pure [mumble]' (malevolence? evil? metal?) Blair guesses 'Lawn gnome?' Dirty look: 'Vampire.' Blair's incredulous. Tal: 'Do you know any human being that can be repeatedly shot, clubbed, shoved into a box, and still have the strength to resist?' Well, Blair does, yeah."

NB: I do not want you to watch this movie. I can't stress that enough. I don't even really recommend that you read the recap, but must needs when the devil drives. Godspeed.
zelempa: Jim Ellison looking kind of stern (jim sternish)
1x10 Vow of Silence "The others cross themselves again, and Blair slaps Jim on the arm affectionately, which for him comes to much the same thing. (Did I just liken Jim to Blair's messiah? Oh... well... I guess that's apt.)"

And we are done with season one. I love The Roundup; I wish I'd done it for every season. I'll just have to fudge it, I guess. Let me know if I missed anything, won't you?

There's still one or two episodes I'd like to complete/spruce up. After that... I don't know. The world! (Or maybe some fic.)

Silly, but therefore thoroughly enjoyable. And the gods of old confirm something about John we've known for a long, long time.

I liked this episode much more on rewatching.

1x9 Attraction "Blair gives Jim a mini-lecture on pheromones, concluding with, 'It's kinda like, ah, when people say that you got chemistry with somebody? Well, we actually do have chemistry.' Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Ha."
zelempa: zelempa classic (Default)
FINALLY! I've been working on this in about five minute increments since the beginning of time, so you may notice that I start to repeat myself; specifically with regards to certain claims about Blair. (Which cannot be proved false!)

1x8 Love and Guns "'Hey, Chief, look, there's no reason to be ashamed if you're a little queasy,' Jim says kindly, putting both hands on Blair's knees. On his knees, dude. Classic gay chicken move. (That would explain a lot about Jim and Blair's relationship, actually.)"

I'll try to go similarly overboard on the Jim screencaps next recap. :)

Comments discussion of Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner books on a previous post reminded me that I actually have a ton of recap-like writing on them (the first two books, anyway). Posted. (The navigation is nonexistent; you'll just have to use your back button to get from one page to the next.)

Will I do the last book? Probably not. The first two form an arc which is satisfactorily concluded. Also, I don't like the third book as much. Sure, it's established relationship, and that's nice, but there's all that boring politics with the elves. (Sorry, Aurenfaie.)
