Yesterday was December 25th, and everyone knows what that means: Yuletide and Due South Seekrit Santa went live! I got lovely treats!

For DSSS: Sing Me A Winter Song, F/K watercolor, a super sweet and romantic and cozy vision of Fraser and Kowalski in their Arctic cabin post-COTW. Blankets! Guitars! Long underwear! New or transported chili pepper lights! Awwwwzheva.

For Yuletide: Ramona's Law of Reciprocal Actions, a futurefic showing the kids from the Ramona series by Beverly Cleary at ages 17+. I love futurefics of kids' lit; I mean, partially it's because I just love high school romances (which this totally IS, and a very sweet one, though I won't spoil the pairing). One of the things I love most about the Ramona series is following the characters over time, watching them grow and change and yet still remain fundamentally themselves. This author's Ramona (and her Susan, Daisy, Howie, Yard Ape, Davy, Beezus...) is very IC but also mature, romance-minded, and vaguely delinquent. It's delightful!

I hope your treats were just as satisfying, friends!

I finally saw an episode of Sherlock. OKAY EVERYBODY WAS RIGHT IT'S DELIGHTFUL.

Today there was a Yuletart comic about John Watson's blog which was really fun! Check it out!
zelempa: Fraser looking apologetic (fraser apologetic)
I haven't gotten my own personal Yuletart present yet - but here's a driveby rec: look how pretty are this mystery artist's Fraser and Ray!
zelempa: Jim Ellison looking kind of stern (jim sternish)
Nice! [livejournal.com profile] alex51432, who wrote one of my <3 DS stories (You Just Have to Leap, aka RAYK WITH A LEARNING DISABILITY), is writing in TS now. She just posted Four Times Jim and Blair Didn't Have Sex, and One Time They Did, a sweet and funny story which gently sends up all of my favorite TS tropes (come for sensory experiments, stay for the h/c with oils and unguents!)

And I did a fabulous beta job, if I do say so myself. (DO NOT FIND TYPOS.)

After I posted my woefully limited TS top-few list, you lovely people gave me some recs of things I should have read ages ago. Well, I am reading them now!

(instead of working. waugh) )

A couple of different people have asked on comms and so forth for all-star favorite TS recs, and I thought I'd give some of mine.

From the repetition of authors here, it'll be clear that I have not read at all widely in this fandom. I tend not to spend nearly as much time enjoying existing things as I do trying to make new things. The downside to that of course is that I end up retreading things that have been done, and I lack important cultural background, and I'm kind of a feedback vacuum; but what can I say? I like making things!

Other caveats: I tend to rec things that were written, and that I read, a long time ago (years), so they've had plenty of time to stew in my mind. I tend to have read authors I know from SGA, because that's how I got into fandom. And I tend to have read only short things, as I'm commitmentphobic.

Onto the hall of fame )

That was--what, only three authors? Obviously I need to get out more. If you want to save me time by recing your all-star favorites, go for it.

Speaking of presents, I totally forgot to mention that I got an ADORABLE Lorne/Parrish comic for [livejournal.com profile] sga_art_santa. Check out The Seed!

You need to read the present I got today from my anonymawesome Secret Santa at [livejournal.com profile] ts_secret_santa. First, know that I asked for "Academic Blair and/or role reversal." My author hits both of them in a clever and emotionally satisfying story. Enjoy Change of Scenery.

Much of what I do at work is routine, and I used to do things like fill in 10 lines of spreadsheet and then read a scene of slash, BUT I just downloaded some PODFICS and now I can *work and hear slash at the same time.* (a) Why did I not do this sooner? (b) I love technology.

So far have listened to [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza's MVP read by [livejournal.com profile] zoetrope, and it's just delightful (cliquez ici). I've read the story before and it's one of my favorites, and Zoetrope has a lovely voice and does a great job.

It'll be hours and hours before I'm out of Cesperanza stories to read, but I did listen to all of the Savage Lovecast archives in a matter of days (how comes everything I listen to at work features repeated uses of the word "cock"?) so if you have favorite podfics, feel free to rec them for me.

i promise

What? No. Of course I don't have the latest mcshep_match rundown. Look, for now, just read Down to Earth for today's Exile prompt. It's funny!
zelempa: zelempa classic (Default)
I feel bad about not staying current with [livejournal.com profile] mcshep_match thing, because it seems like a lot of people are losing interest and/or having a hard time keeping up (less comments on the newer stories, anyway). And I want to support my team! So here's my rundown of the stories since my last installment. Select whatever seems interesting to you, and don't forget to leave feedback (like I always do)! (Honestly, though, I feel weird about leaving feedback for my own team, because what do I do about my own story? So I just haven't been.)

i can't believe i've missed so many that this warrants an lj cut )

I'll probably do another rundown-style post in another week or so, since I've still got moving to do. See you on the other side!
zelempa: zelempa classic (Default)
Okay, so my plan to post recs of all the mcshep_match stories isn't working out--they're going way too fast for me (I haven't even read them all!) and this is sort of a busy, unstructured, uncertain time for me BUT they are good and you should keep reading them. Of special interest is the Stargate! Crack! Musical! Sing the City Electric.

I have spent the last few days in an FF12 haze.

Finest Hour: Moments, Coming and Going: John, caught between life and death, recalls bittersweet memories. An introspective and extremely nuanced story.

Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: Homonculus: The gang has to deal with a John who is just kind of--off. And you have an inkling from the prompt of what's happening, but it's still really creepy.

Deja Vu: What Dreams May Come: I am still whimpering from this story. SOOO ANGSTY. Yay, hurting Rodney! Take that!
zelempa: zelempa classic (Default)
Up for Team Angst is Paschal's Lamb, a story that has been described by me as "poetically written and angsty in a kind of aching and lovely way." Feel the sting of memory and the confusion of identity along with PTSD Rodney! Care with the uncertain compassion of lover John!

I'm also charmed by today's Romance story, Up to and Including the Blue Moon Ball. The premise is simple--John and Rodney, for reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, end up going to a social event together. The getting-together is inevitable but done gradually enough to be savored; it's especially cute that the pivotal moment involves holding hands under the banquet table. Look, the story involves one guy tying another guy's tie. That is like my Achilles heel.
zelempa: zelempa classic (Default)
I forgot to do a [livejournal.com profile] mcshep_match rec post yesterday! One out of two ain't bad, right? I think you can still vote in previous day's stories? I hope so, because I probably won't be able to get to some of the stories on the day they're posted, since I'm going on vacation tomorrow! But I'm not allowed to vote anyway. So you should! Please enjoy these!

Anyway: Yesterday's prompt was Catch-22 and Team Angst's story was Iteration. Rodney is faced with a difficult moral dilemma when he's given the opportunity to save John's life at the expense of another. It's a clever story which explores Rodney's and John's ethics and honor. Whee, ethics and honor!

Today's is Correspondence, and up for the team is Rock, Paper (No Scissors). John and Rodney are stuck passing notes in a sort of alien jail with elementary school undertones. It's funny and brutal all at once. Whee, hurting John! Take that!
zelempa: zelempa classic (Default)
[livejournal.com profile] mcshep_match started today! Two McKay/Sheppard fics a day posted anonymously for the next 25 days, one each from Team Angst and Team Romance. I'm on Team Angst, so one of the stories will be mine (no way to tell which one! unless you're really, really good at spotting my writing style, which, considering that I have a total of 2 fics online, one of which was co-written, is unlikely.) Whatever team gets the highest total points at the end wins.

You should go now and give high marks to Acidimia, not just because it's on my team, but because it's excellent. The premise is that John is captured by the Wraith and made into a runner. We get to see John's fight for survival, as he super-honorably refuses to go back to Atlantis and lead the wraith there (I love honor!) and we get to see the effect on those left behind, specifically Rodney (I love the homefront!)

Here's my illustration for [livejournal.com profile] resonant8 and [livejournal.com profile] kassrachel's "Origin". I chose this moment because I think it represents something I really like about the story--the intense yet kind of unusual intimacy. Plus, blindfold. This time I researched the costumes carefully! I looked up what "chambray" was!

Super bonus: Line art outline, suitable for publication in your next Classic Slash Coloring Book.
zelempa: zelempa classic (Default)
This weekend I drew my first (and undoubtedly not last) illustration for a slash story. This is for [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza's "Benched". I'm pretty happy with the dreamy way the cartoony style/blendy colored pencil came out. It turns out to be kind of inaccurate to the scene for wardrobe reasons, but whatevs!

Click to see the full size version! (It's not actually much bigger but there is more Stargate background.)

As always you can find the rest of my recent fannish art approximately here.

My first vid in a year; my second ever; and my first using Virtual Dub and Premiere instead of Windows Movie Maker. Yay!

Alternately, it's on imeem. )

ETA: I have been watching other people's Jim/Blair vids, and I can't even *BELIEVE* all the gay stuff that happens after season 1. CANNOT.
