Like Serenity, it's probably maximally enjoyable when you don't know what's coming, up until The Part, which is much better when you know what's coming because you're numb to it and can enjoy the rest without anxiety. I've been encouraged to think of it like a villain origin story or Shakespearean tragedy. Kind of just wish I'd known I'd have to do that going in. Joss should label it clearly, as Shakespeare does: "The Tragedy of Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog." Or maybe I should just assume that everything he produces should be preceded by "The Tragedy of"?

My last post was at the bottom of the "U" shaped graph of my enjoyment of the show. After my second viewing (and last--I now officially don't have time to watch it again before it goes offline) I'm on the upswing. What I didn't describe yesterday was my pure and utter joy at every one of Neil Patrick Harris's facial expressions (and at Nathan Fillion's facial expression!) My favorite moment is still after Captain Hammer walks out with Penny after his brilliant parting line, and the camera just focuses on Billy's face, looking understandably crushed - and then his mouth quirks into a cold and awful smile.

I actually don't think about Barney when I'm watching Dr. H, but I do think a lot about Doogie Howser. They're similar characters in a way. I can definitely see Doogie thinking, "The world is a mess and I just need to rule it."

I have heard that Joss Whedon hates love!

Does he? Actually, I have no problem with that.

Well, I have no idea if he actually does or not. It's a generalization based on his work-- if there's a happy couple, probably one of them will die.

Perhaps he just hates happiness.

Hating love is fine by me. There's enough stories about (in particular romantic) love. It would be cool if someone actually motivated their characters with something else.
