This episode was fine I guess. Kinda plot-heavy, and not enough antics. On the other hand, the Wraith Who Loves John is back. And man, does he love John.
Our previously includes scenes from the episode with the Wraith Who Loves John (WWLJ). Yay!
Teyla drags the team to see a seer she has heard about to ask about her people's fate. Sheppard thinks the people will be skittish and says "Children, let's be on our best behavior." What's with John's recent dad-isms? I think he's trying to show McKay he's ready to settle down. McKay is skeptical about psychic powers, but far from being skittish, the people meet them at the gate, saying they've been expecting the party, and the seer gives Rodney a vision: the team being captured by the Wraith.
Meanwhile back on Atlantis, Woolsey arrives to perform Carter's three-month evaluation. He tells her not to worry about interference as "I'm here strictly as an observer." Where have I heard that before?
Carter gets a message from an away team who have had contact with some Wraith? I guess? For some reason? WWLJ wants to meet with Sheppard and discuss "a matter of great importance." I think he finally picked a ring! When Carter tells the team about it, the description of the rendezvous planet matches the planet Rodney saw in his vision, but they decide to go anyway. There, with a growing sense of trepidation, Rodney begins to warm up to the idea of future-predicting powers, likening it to card-counting.
RODNEY: And this feels like hitting on an eighteen!
JOHN: Actually it's more like doubling down on a ten.
You don't have to know anything about blackjack (I don't) to tell that's classic banter. Allow me to demonstrate:
RODNEY (fearfully or smugly, depending on the circumstance): Strangely specific geeky pop culture reference!
JOHN (laconically, no matter what the circumstance): Correction betraying equal or greater knowledge of the thing referenced.
(OPTIONAL) RODNEY: <3 <3 <3 <3
Wraith surround the team, who lift their P90s. WWLJ strides up, scolding that he told John to come unarmed. "Sorry about that," says John as two jumpers decloak above the group. John shrugs adorably.
Keller goes to see the seer. He's dying!
John and Ronon go to see WWLJ in the Atlantis brig. WWLJ pouts about being ambushed and then gives his info: the Wraith need McKay's help to reverse the attack-the-Wraith code he activated on the Replicators. "Get to the part where we care," says John, so WWLJ does: the Replicators have started destroying human worlds in order to cut off the Wraith food supply. The Atlanteans confirm the story, learning that a thriving world of 75,000 people has been totally wiped out. Rodney feels some guilt (!!).
SAM: You have had more experience with the Wraith that just about anyone. And in particular, with this Wraith. You have a history.
JOHN: Well, it's not like we're dating.
!!!
The seer becomes lucid for awhile and gives Carter a vision of Atlantis being attacked--seriously attacked, towers falling off etc.--by Replicator ships. Given the vision, Woolsey is able to make some extremely cogent arguments against joining forces with the Wraith against said Replicators. Meanwhile John, when pushed, reveals himself to be very much for helping WWLJ. Oh, sure, he says it's because all the humans are dying and it's their fault, but he's never seemed to care much about such things before.
WOOLSEY: Our priority in this galaxy remains the safety of this mission, and you know as well as I do the Wraith can't be trusted.
JOHN (grits): This one may be different.
Chuck delivers the news that a hive ship is heading right for Atlantis. John storms into the brig where WWLJ assures him it's just his loyal followers with the info needed for the anti-attack-code program. John threatens to blow it up, and WWLJ says if he does that he'll broadcast the coordinates of Atlantis to everyone.
WWLJ: There is no reason for us to be at odds, John Sheppard. We need each other.
Teyla finally catches up with the seer who tells her her people are alive but "shrouded in darkness." Big help. He also reveals to the audience that Teyla is pregnant. Yawn.
Sam talks to WWLJ and is convinced to go along with him.
WWLJ: I believe among your people it is customary to shake hands. (holds out his vicious maneating hand as marines cock their guns; laughs) Just a little Wraith humor.
He has been around John tooooo long.
Rodney and the Wraith argue about coding. So cute!
Another ship is headed for Atlantis. Ronon and John are ready to shoot WWLJ, who claims to know nothing. Rodney suggests an opposing Wraith camp might have been tracking WWLJ without his knowledge, suspecting him of treachery. Way to offer him an out, Rodney. WWLJ is all, yeah, hey, that's right, you should cloak the city. John jumps on board with the idea and Woolsey is once again the only one saying, Uh, hey, maybe we shouldn't disable our shields while a Wraith ship is orbiting us. It's weird that he is sort of painted as a bad guy for having the city's interests at heart.
Sam asks the seer if it's possible to change a vision of the future. He says no, though sometimes visions are misinterpreted (hint, hint). Sam has trouble accepting the idea that the future is predetermined.
Sam and John have an interesting conversation. John says that although Woolsey is right that they have to care about the safety of the city, "What the hell is the point of being out here except to help people?" Seriously, when did he adopt this philosophy? I really want to know. Sam says it was easy to make such decisions for herself, but it's harder to ask so many people to risk their lives. John says they all chose to be here. Man, they do use that to justify a whole lot of recklessness.
Woolsey declines to go home before they cloak. Bravery!
I know I can't be the only one who finds John lying back in the chair to prepare to fire the drones strangely sexual every time.
There's a boatload of tension as the two ships approach and prep their weapons. Woolsey tries to take over command in order to get John to fire. But John listens to Sam's order to wait, and Rodney reports that the hive ships have begun firing on each other. Phew! Don't know what Sam was thinking, though.
Oh, and the seer dies.
Woolsey leaves after an admittedly "awkward" moment with Carter. John meets up with Carter and claims that Woolsey leaving without saying goodbye to him "hurts [his] feelings." Jackass. John reports that McKay and the Wraith are "at it" but that there's no progress with the virus yet. (Possibly because their coding foreplay has led to some inevitable Wraith/human action which John might want to actually get in on.) We end with Sam and John continuing to contemplate the vision of the destruction of Atlantis. "For all we know it won't come true for another thousand years." "Or it could come true tomorrow." "Right," says John. "So what else is new?"
