Forward from a non-slashy friend, but since it's fannish, and I picked all (mostly) slashy shows, I'll post it here.
Pick five series and then answer the questions. Don't look at the questions before you choose!
1. Stargate: Atlantis
2. The Sentinel
3. Xena
4. Due South
5. Scrubs
1. Which is your favourite series from your list? And why?
Scrubs is the one I legitimately think is the best. It's generally well-written, and I also find it very comforting; I could (and do) watch the same episodes over and over. But just to give awards to the others, SGA is the one I have the most fannish affection for, TS is the one where I most fervently adore the pairing, Xena is the one I have been historically most obsessed about (having embraced it religiously between the ages of 10 and 13), and DS is the one with what I consider the hottest pairing (in most pairings one of the partners is more attractive to me than the other, but I think both Fraser and RayK are ridiculously yummy).
2. If you were to pair two characters from 1 and 4, who would they be?
SGA and Due South? Why have I not thought about this before, and in GREAT DETAIL?? Let's see. We could have the All Canadian Allstars in McKay and Fraser, but I think Fraser would find McKay perplexing, and vice versa. We could have the Krazy Ks (McKay and RayK), but I'm pretty sure Ray would punch McKay within a minute, and McKay would go crying to John about the savage who's wasting his valuable time. Sheppard and Fraser would probably team up effectively to complete some objective, but John is not moral enough to win Fraser's admiration, nor, I think, is he fucked-up and vulnerable in the right way to engage his protective instinct. Possibly Sheppard and Ray would have the most in common in their mutual enjoyment of destruction, but in the end I'm probably going to have to go with Thatcher/Weir.
3. What would you like to change about 3's plotline?
Seasons 4+, for the most part. That's probably not fair since I stopped watching around then (because I felt it got bad), so I'm not totally up on Xena mythos (I just learned for the first time yesterday about the plotline where Gabrielle is under a Sleeping Beauty spell and can only be wakened by her soulmate Xena, which I would have certainly enjoyed had it come on sooner), but I could do without all of the world tours, evil babies, and humorless overangsting. If I could advise them retroactively, I'd say stick to Greek myths (there's plenty of them), god-related plotlines, adventure, humor, and slash, and don't try to be all Serious and Important.
4. If both main characters of 2 and 5 were falling off a cliff, which one would you save?
One main character per show or more? Because if it was just Jim and J.D., I guess I'd save Jim, because J.D. is kind of wretched (especially these days). But if it was Jim, Blair, J.D., Turk, Elliot, and Dr. Cox, I'd probably save Elliot. Don't know why. I think I just feel like she'd need it the most.
5. Which event was the most horrible for you in 1?
Probably the gratuitous death of a major character by way of exploding tumor. I'm just glad I was spoiled for it.
6. Which is your least favorite character of 2?
Anyone except Jim and Blair. Oh, and I don't dislike Simon. Other than that, there... aren't really any other characters. Um. Jim in 1993?
7. If the antagonist of 3 were to rape the main character of 1, what would you do?
Whoa! What the fuck kind of question is that? But Callisto/John non-con would be kind of great, actually.
8. What song reminds you of 5?
Any time a song from Scrubs comes on the radio I can identify it as "some song which was on Scrubs," because I, unlike anyone else in the universe, have no other associations with the many popular songs they use. So I guess the answer is "lots, but I don't know the names of any of them."
9. Of 1, 3, and 5, which is the easiest to think about?
SGA is the one I think about the most. I think Scrubs is the easiest to watch, because I do watch it often and because it's half and hour so you don't have to commit (although I often end up watching a whole disk at a time anyway) and because it's not particularly slashy so I don't feel like I have to take notes. (It's not like I'm going to be writing, vidding, or recapping it.) Xena is quite easy to think about--I did it often once--but I'm not in the groove. I think SGA is going to be my final answer--it's just so easy to make castles-in-the-air about it because so many things are implied or introduced without being completely explored, and because Rodney is such a completely-drawn, lovable (to me) character, and because John is such a blank slate. Speaking of easy, he's also quite easy on the eyes. Also, he is easy.
10. Are the protagonists of 2 and 4 similar?
Jim and Fraser are both officers of the law, interested in doing what's right and maintaining law and order, form close emotional bonds with their partners, and routinely jump on things that they should not survive jumping onto and then just get up unfazed. I would say that they're both probably ISTJ or similar. (Well, Fraser is probably N, actually.)
Differences are that Fraser is much more interested in Right as a concept and in championing it, while Jim's attitude seems to be more that being a cop is his job, and not his Role in Humanity. Jim also tends to be more relaxed in his personal life. He goes on dates, he likes sex, he's fairly obviously just doing his sidekick. Fraser seems to be much more old-fashioned and gentlemanly and prudish (although Jim has his occasional moments of that, too). Finally, Jim is sometimes just an asshole for no real reason except that he feels like it and he's a human and humans are selfish creatures, and Fraser is only an asshole when he doesn't sufficiently understand feelings to realize it or when to be kinder would violate a principle for him.
Hmm, looks like that's it. I was just getting into it!

on 2007-09-20 12:08 pm (UTC)Oh-kay. Ewww. I think I'm glad I've never seen SGA.
#10 -- interesting to compare the two. I remember watching DS, but not really any details about it, and have read a few fanfics around the edges -- I know I've read this, but I don't know if it's canon or fanon, that Fraser also tends to rely on his senses sometimes?
