Dear Yuletide Writer

So, despite not having posted or checked this journal for, oh... most of 2009 (I regret missing some of your comments, and TS Secret Santa and various other end-of-year challenges I meant to glom onto at last moment--d'oh!) I am participating in Yuletide! So glad I didn't miss the deadline (Thursday).

Thanks for writing for me! I know you'll come up with something great, and I don't want to derail you if you've got the germs of some ideas already. But in case you don't, or you'd like a little more direction, I'll talk a little bit about some of my favorite aspects of the fandoms I picked.

Hamlet Out of the wealth of Yule choices, I just picked fandoms I'm passionate about right now, and Hamlet is one of them, largely because for reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, I'm working on an illustrated comic version of the 'rogue and peasant slave' speech. I have this theory that Hamlet is basically a gen-X type guy, you know, the kind of guy who's all sort of modern and slacker-y and feels inadequate and weak and unmanly in comparison to older generations of manly man's men like Claudius. Guys who, say what you will about them morally, got things done. I don't require you to buy into this analogy, of course, but I should point out I like analogies generally. A modernization or AU would be cool. It probably also goes without saying that I'd totally believe Hamlet/Horatio.

Baby-sitters Club I grew up reading these books, and lately I've been re-reading them. They stand up remarkably well, and I catch certain things now--the infidelity or at least sexual incompatibility subtext in Dawn's parents' divorce; how Kristy is totally a lesbian; how Claudia is totally interested in Stacey as MORE THAN A FRIEND--that I didn't catch when I was a kid, possibly because they are actually not there and I have become a slasher. Errrm.

The main thing I don't like about the series is the frozen-in-time aspect, and I'd love to see what happens to the characters--the baby-sitters or their charges--post-eighth grade. Whether you want to to go along with the idea that they were in 8th grade during almost the whole run of the series, or pretend that the events of the series took longer, or any other messing with the timeline you need to do, go for it.

I should probably mention that the reason I'm particularly passionate about this right now is that I've been working on a massive review project located here. Obviously this is way too tl;dr to be required reading and I'd never give my Yule writer homework, but it might be useful to you if you a quick reference to look something up.

The Guild I discovered The Guild really really recently and watched all of it to date in one sitting. I need more. MORE, YULETIDE WRITER. GIVE ME MORE. I actually don't know that much about WoW or online gaming, but I love all the characters. Bladezz and Dana are probably my favorites in terms of their dialogue and just watching them, but I think the character I would most like to see explored in fic is probably Zaboo. What a weirdo. I don't know if I want him to get Codex or not. I like Riley, too, and I'd be happy to see her in the story. (I don't know if I want HER to get Codex or not. Maybe you can make up my mind for me.)

The Scarlet Pimpernel I reread this book recently and watched both the Leslie Howard and Anthony Andrews movies (both great). Sir Percy is fascinating and wonderful, and I'd like any story which focuses on him--either from his POV or another character interacting with him--and includes at least some of him in his foppish persona. I do adore the foppish persona.

Normally I kind of avoid het and canon pairings, but I have to say I feel like there's plenty of story left to tell with Marguerite and Percy. (Granted I have not read any of the sequels.) Especially how things change after she knows. For example, does Percy then feel obligated to break off his extramarital affair with Sir Andrew Ffoukes?

Generally I primarily write and read slash, so I'm happy to have any characters slashed or femslashed in any of the fandoms I've picked. But, I don't require it! I also love: overly intense platonic friendships; het with nontraditionally het gender/power dynamics; character studies; team-building gen.

I am neutral about kink, and difficult to squick.

I like zany crackfic. But I also like ridiculously intense emo angst. And I also like bizarre combinations of these things.

And I like warm fuzzy happy endings, as well as generally happy endings a weird minor chord of bittersweetness.

I like exceptions to all of these preferences when they are well and interestingly done. I like experimentation. I like what you'll enjoy writing, whatever makes you smile and laugh a little bit when you sit back from your screen.

That's basically what I like.

Happy Yuletide! See you on December 21.

In the Chinese proverbial manner, if you know what I mean. But I'm still fanning away. :-)
