Ahaha! I've never read that story. So that's a reference I didn't even know I was making. Where it did come from, I think, is I had just started Crime and Punishment and so the girl was sort of based on Raskolnikov, with the other university suspects meant to sort of suggest Leopold and Loeb (who are my longtime historical murderer OTP. Is it weird that I have one of those?) I just figured, creepy murder suspects in a university, they're probably going to be those killing-out-of-curiosity-and/or-sense-of-own-intellectual-superiority types. I think I was also thinking of one or more of the Lord Peter Wimsey books (or possibly Count of Monte Cristo) where people kill old people thinking it's the perfect crime since everyone will assume they died of natural causes. I think one of those even involved digitalis.
