Well, it's sort of unclear; Blair's surprised, too. He never really did try a formal ceremony like that - he was attacking it haphazardly, and increasingly desperately; it's easy to see how a solution could slip through the cracks in that kind of situation. Personally, I think Shelby helped, but that Blair is the actual Guide; Shelby just helped him return to that sense of mystical wonder and faith which was necessary for success. But the story doesn't demand that that be correct answer, and I like the idea that the sacrifice--the willingness to give up his position as Guide--helped him win.

And, yeah, I think to some extent it *was* the spirits being like, "Okay, Blair, you're getting too big for your britches; see how you like getting your Sentinel taken away! No, you can't have him back! Nope! Nope! Nope! ...Okay." Because honestly? That was ME.

Shelby, Shelby, Shelby. She has her work cut out for her. :)
