I went away for the weekend (ironically, to a heterosexual wedding) bringing several library books with me. Here are my reviews.

Empress of the World by Sara Ryan (2001) ***
This is your standard girl-gets-girl, girl-loses-girl, girl-gets-girl-back-again, all in the span of a summer geek camp that takes place at a college campus. And there's really not much more to the story. It's sort of unclear why Nic gets, loses, or gets Battle (her name is Battle) back again. It's very cleverly written, though.
The underlying message... )

Geography Club by Brent Hartinger (2003) ****
The premise of this book is pretty neat: a bunch of closeted gay kids from different cliques find each other through the grapevine and figure out that the best way for them to meet and hang out and support each other with some measure of confidentiality is to form a club (which they can claim their going to for their college resumes) which is so boring nobody else would join. "Geography Club" is great in that regard. Nobody likes geography!
Everybody likes Gay Angst. )

Luna by Julie Anne Peters (2004) **
The nice thing about this book is that it represents the T in LGBTQQQQQ, which very few books do. The annoying thing about it is that it's an "all issue, all the time" book. This would be semi-excusable if the narrator were Luna, the titular trans girl--although it's both disheartening and completely unbelievable she doesn't have anything else going on in her life, but hey, this is the topic the book's about, and you can see how gender might influence a lot of the things in your life--but since the narrator is actually Luna's sister Regan, it's ridiculous. Why wouldn't she have anything else going on in her life?
Oh, sure... )

If you have read any young adult books with gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender main characters that you enjoyed and think I would enjoy, or found annoying and would like me to try my hand at pinpointing why, rec away!
