So you've probably heard about [livejournal.com profile] amireal's plan to get a bunch of fangirls together to advertise in Variety about how we, as a demographic, exist. (This is a response to, but not necessarily a plea to reverse, the cancellation of SGA.) [livejournal.com profile] liviapenn objected (more eloquently, I think, in the comments to this rebuttal post) that $10,000 is an awful lot of money to spend on a single ad that's unlikely to get the female fans what they want--recognition and content created for them. I was leaning toward agreeing with her, but you know, people can do whatever they want with their money.

Then in the comments to [livejournal.com profile] liviapenn's post, [livejournal.com profile] astolat notes that what really might make a difference is if we were able to raise that kind of money to create our own content. Money aside, fandom is rife with the kind of skills you need to produce a web video short, from conception to post-production.

Now this is inspiring! Imagine if we were able to work together to create the kind of content we want to see. I don't know if it would gain the attention of the people making television, but the point is, it doesn't NEED to. Our goal is to get the kind of content we want to watch! So... let's make our own content to watch! Neatly sidestepping the patriarchal Establishment and at the same time, being super, super fun.

Who's with me?!

(My enthusiasm is pretty much useless since I actually have almost none of the necessary skills. Still, there have got to be some aspiring filmmakers in fandom. People who know what a storyboard is and how you light a shot. I know none of this. I'd be happy to cowrite the script, though.)
