On betaing
Jan. 3rd, 2008 09:26 amThe good news is I made a New Year's resolution to write more this year, and, in that spirit, I signed up for
12in2008, so theoretically, you can expect 12 stories from me this year, a significant improvement from my previous 2007 and 2006 records of 2 and like a half, respectively. And indeed, I have in the last few days been making some progress. The bad news is that my family is having their Christmas this weekend, so you won't get to see any of it for awhile longer. Ha!
I've rhapsodied on the subject of my amazing beta before (she FIXED MY PRISONFIC! She SAVED CHRISTMAS), and the effect of having someone to roll around ideas with, to tell you what doesn't work, to help tweak your jokes, and to find those pesky "and and"s (I write in notepad, okay? I need that) cannot be overstated.
In
mcshep_match I beta'd some people's stuff, and I loved it, so I just wanted to tell you, dear Reader (all one of you), that I'm a willing and ready volunteer if you want a new pair of eyes on an SGA, TS or DS story sometime. (Or another show that I know? Just ask.) I should warn you that classically the effect of my critique has been pretty much suggesting that people cut things, which I know has got to be unsatisfying. Still, I love tossing around ideas, thinking about emotional arcs, dissecting scenes to see how they tick, and brainstorming ways to make a line or an exchange funnier or more effective, and I know where commas are supposed to go (even if I don't always follow my own rules).
On the flip side, if you happen to be someone who knows what plot things happened in various episodes of SGA and how the technology works, I could really use you. That kind of stuff just falls out of my head. I'm sure I'm committing sins against canon left and right.
Anyway, just letting you know that, like Blair for Jim, I'm HERE FOR YOU. If you NEED ME. In your apartment. Calling from inside the house!
