Dear Yuletide Writer
Ha ha. I signed up for Yuletide. Listen, two of the three Secret Santas which I have not yet done are due next week, so after next week I'll be free! Right? Right.
Hello, Yuletide writer!!! *waves arms wildly* I am so thrilled to have you writing for me.
Psmith - P.G. Wodehouse
I have been rereading these recently and boy do I love them. So funny and (IMO) so romantic! Psmith is absolutely one of my favorite kinds of characters. I love his incessant chattering, grandiosity, and general weirdness. But I also adore the underrated Mike. He's such an all-around good guy. I feel like his slightly awkward, down-to-earth gruffness balances out Psmith really well. Given all the guys' hanging around together and living together and, on Psmith's part, effusive declarations of devotion--it doesn't take much tweaking to make it slash. However, that is not necessary and I would also be happy with close friendshippy gen.
In my request I asked for something set either in school, circa "Mike and Psmith," or in London, circa "Psmith in the City." Those are my favorite books. As is probably obvious from the rest of the things I've requested, I'm big on school and workplace romance & friendship.
Ramona Series - Beverly Cleary
I have also been rereading these! In my request I said, "What I love most about the books is how well it captures what it feels like to be a kid in school -- all the joys and unfairnesses. I'd love a future fic showing what happens to Ramona and her friends in middle school or high school. I want to see how Yard Ape turns out, what became of dear little Davy who never gets anything right, and of course Ramona! Rulebreaking, mischief, school politics, heartwarmingness all pluses."
Just to clarify: While I don't require schoolkid romance, I'm not against it. If you go that route, surprise me! (F/M, M/M and F/F are all okay with me.) I would like to see some solid friendship either way! I also like and would be happy to see: anybody in Ramona's family; Daisy; Susan; Howie.
Better Off Ted
I said: "I'd love friendship or femslash with Linda and Veronica. I love their hijinksy, guy-ish relationship and the way they bring out the worst in each other (or what they think is the worst--Linda's competitiveness and Veronica's shred of humanity)."
What I love about Veronica and Linda is that they can get up to hijinks around the Viridian office as silly and weird as anything McKay and Sheppard come up with exploring Atlantis (e.g. the bagel throwing contest). It seems pretty clear to me that at least Linda is attracted to Victoria, as evidenced by her elaborate compliments when intoxicated. But I would also be happy with a fic that features their friendship and the way they grudgingly just like each other. It would also be interesting to see what role Ted would play in a Veronica-and-Linda centered story: irrelevant? off doing something else? or would he play a key role? I'm open to (but don't require) a poly/threesome fic.
Square Pegs
I said: "For some reason this cheesy high school show pings my slashdar in a very minor and diffuse way. So I'd really like any kind of slash. Johnny Slash is an obvious choice. But I also see possibilities for Vinnie and Marshall (especially in the Love Detector episode), and of course Lauren and Patty. Or even nonintuitive pairings like Muffy/Jennifer! Another option I would really like is a big friendshippy team thing with Patty, Lauren, Johnny, and Marshall joining forces and contributing their unique talents, Ocean's Eleven style, to pull off some kind of caper. Bonus points if they get Vinnie and Jennifer on their side, too."
I love cliche high school shows, and Square Pegs definitely is a one of those--although it also had moments of startlingly actual humor. Because the characters are 9th-graders (even though the actors were mostly adults), I'd like to keep the rating of the story to PG-13, but I can think of so many great awkward high school romance scenarios. Everyone on the show seems to have a feeling of himself or herself as an outsider, and I love the moments in the show when that is either explored, or alleviated by a moment of closeness. So that is ultimately what I would really like in a fic. In the spirit of the show, though, humor/crack would be great, too!
It appears the words I've used most in all of these requests are "romance" and "hijinks." At least I'm consistent!
