In a prior draft of the story, there was more of Commander Ayal's reaction to Keia, which was basically: he understood her impulse to violence; he agreed with her assessment that Rienn was probably guilty; but he still disapproved of turning on a sister-at-arms prior to the workings of justice. And in front of outsiders, no less. So, yeah.
